Swaminarayan Akshardham is one of the most awe-inspiring complex in India and the world’s largest Hindu temple. It features a temple, a garden, three exhibitions and a musical fountain.
The temple was built in 2005 as a tribute to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, a modern icon of Hinduism. It perfectly embodies ancient Hindu and Indian art and architecture, as it was built according to very strict traditional architectural guidelines. For example, it has no steel support at all.
Pink stone and marble were used for the construction of the temple. It features, amongst others, nine domes, 234 finely carved pillars and 148 life sized elephants.
You can also choose to visit 3 exhibitions. One is about Swaminarayan’s life, the other is the screening of Mystic India, a movie presenting teenage Swaminarayan’s pilgrimage all over India. The third one is in the form of a boat ride, presenting you different Indian personalities.
